6th Grade Summer Assignment

SUMMER 2020 

 

Dear incoming 6th graders,

You have 2 assignments due on the first day of school 🙂

  • ELA– due on the first day of school for a quiz grade  (read on for directions**)

and

  • Math-please log onto I-Ready and do practice lessons for 1/2 hour a week (or a total of 4 hours for the whole summer)

**Summer Book Report Form for Students Entering 6th Grade

 

Directions for your book report – Please READ THEM CAREFULLY.

*due on the first day of school (late assignments will result in reduced grades)

Read 1 of the following books

Holes by Louis Sachar

The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Spear

Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper

 

  1. . Make a COVER PAGE for your report with the title and a picture from your book – this should be typed.
  2.  Your report should be double-spaced, 14 font, typed
  3.  Follow the writing process: • Brainstorm – get your ideas down on paper • Rough draft – each paragraph needs a topic sentence and support details • Final draft – spell check, correct grammar, make sure all sentences are complete thoughts • Read out loud – read your report out loud to yourself. How does it sound? Can you make any more changes? (ONLY FINAL DRAFT NEEDS TO BE HANDED IN)

Report Outline:

First Paragraph – Introduction – 3-4 sentences Book title Author Setting- where and when the story takes place

Second Paragraph – Characters: 6-10 sentences Describe (up to) 3 characters in the book • What they look like • What is their personality • What do the other characters think about them • How do they change in the story?

 Third Paragraph – Plot: 7-10 sentences  Briefly describe what happens in the story. What is the problem or conflict in the story and how was it resolved or solved?

Final Paragraph – Conclusion: Your opinion – 5 sentences Did you like the book? What was your favorite part of the book? Would you recommend reading this book?
