3rd Graders Learning About Lent

Wow! Is it time for Lent already?! 3rd graders at St. Jude the Apostle School are all set and ready to go! We began preparing for Ash Wednesday the day before by learning the true meaning of ash Wednesday: where the ashes come from, what they symbolize, etc. We then created these beautiful “dust drawings” after finding and reading Genesis 3:19 to learn and discuss what “Thou art from dust and to dust you shall return” really means. Do you know? On Wednesday, we created our Lenten Prayer Chain. After listening to Father’s homily that morning, we knew that prayer was one of the things that we do during Lent to grow in our faith. Each child was asked to write the name of one person on each slip of purple paper that they wanted to pray for during Lent. We then joined our links together to make a chain of 30 links (the # of days that we are in school during Lent). Each day, as art of our morning meeting, we will remove a link and pray for that person. How are you going to keep prayer important during Lent? We can’t wait to continue our journey together through Lent with activities like hatching chicks in the classroom, service projects, and making Resurrection cookies. Now all we need is for Old Man Winter to let go and bring on spring weather and new growth of the Earth.
